Intermediaries profiteer in Russia

According to an interview with the president of Eurocement Group Michael Skorohod published today in the Rossiiskaya Gazeta, activities of intermediary firms profiting from the resale of cement are causing concerns at the State Duma Committee on Industry, Construction and High Tech and with Andrey Tsyganov, Deputy Head of the Federal Anti-Monopoly Service.

Portugal Azores cement sales down

Cement sales in Portugal’s autonomous region of the Azores Islands registered a 2.7 per cent year-on-year decrease to a total 27,724t in April 2005, data from the Azores regional statistics office SREA showed on June 15, 2005. China produced 87,620,800t of cement in April 2005. The output in January-April reached 266,033,100y, up 4.1 per cent year on year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.  

Saudi Q1 2005 cement output climbs

The cement output of Saudi Arabia’s eight listed cement companies rose to 6.456Mt for the first three months of 2005 from 6.169Mt in the corresponding period of 2004, recent statistics showed.  Cement exports also increased to 457,000t from 398,000t, with only three of the eight companies exported cement during the period. Clinker exports registered a drop to 51,000t from 75,000t 

Lucky and Pioneer top cement export figures

Lucky Cement and Pioneer Cement topped the export table in May because of higher demand for cement from Afghanistan and Iraq. Sources said cement exported to Afghanistan and Iraq during May 2005 amounted to 170,565t, less than April’s figure of 186,598t. The discontinuation of cement imports into Jamaica since the duty was raised to over 40 per cent early last year has deprived the treasury of potential import duty of about J$100m, Business Observer calculations suggest. Saudi Arabia to cut cement import duties

Saudi Arabia will cut duties on cement imports to five per cent from 20 per cent to help meet rising domestic demand, Saudi media said on Tuesday.  The lower duty will not be introduced until January 1 2006.
