Lehigh Cement lays off 39 workers

According to the union that represents more than 75 per cent of the workers at Lehigh Southwest Cement’s plant north of Redding, California, USA, Lehigh Cement made the decision to lay off 39 workers on Friday, 9 September 2016. Curt Aderhold, president of the union, said an email was sent out on Thursday evening to inform of the layoffs. Junior employees were said to be immediately let go. US cement shipments for June reach 9.2Mt

Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico in June 2016 were about 9.2Mt, up by 2.7 per cent from sales in June 2015, reports the US Geological Survey. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Illinois, and Ohio, in descending order) received about 35.7 per cent of the June shipments. Ecocem invests EUR30m in new JV plant

Ireland’s Ecocem has invested EUR30m into a new production plant in the north of France as part of a joint venture with ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steel company. The joint venture, in which Ecocem holds a 70 per cent stake, will increase the company’s capacity from 1.4Mta to 2Mta. The US Geological Survey has released preliminary results for the US cement shipments up to June 2016. US deliveries totalled 8,146,984t of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and blended cements in June, while foreign imports totalled just over 1Mt. Cemex USA has been awarded the US Environmental Protection Agency's Eneregy Star certification for 2016 at five of its cement plants. The Brooksville, Miami, Clinchfield, Fairborn and Victorville plants have all been recognised by Eneregy Star for their efforts in energy efficiency and sustainability.
