Pakistan: good news for coal industry

The Pakistan International Bulk Terminal, which is currently under construction at Port Qasim, is expected to commence operation by the end of the year. Sumitomo Osaka 1.4Mt coal consumption in 2015

Japanese cement manufacturer Sumitomo Osaka Cement reported that it had consumed 1.41Mt of coal for the fiscal year 2015 (year end 31 March 2016). This figure is a 2.7 per cent YoY decrease from the fiscal year 2014, when consumption reached 1.44Mt. Petcoke consumption for the same period was 0.1Mt, up 19 per cent from 0.08Mt from fiscal year 2014.

Nigeria: Dangote Cement to switch to using coal

Dangote Cement has announced plans to begin its own coal mining operations as it switches away from gas as a means for powering its plants. The company will begin producing coal at the Ankpa mines in Kogi State from 4Q16. Local protestors in Kyaikmaraw in southeast Myanmar have reacted angrily to the publication of a report into the building a new coal-fired cement plant, Burma News International reports. Shree Cement has announced that it has won a bid to be supplied with 80,000tpa of coal from state-owned firm South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL), reports the Economic Times. The deal will see Shree pay INR970/t (US$14.45/t) for the grade 11 coal – in line with the prevailing prices charged by SECL. UltraTech Cement, one of the largest cement manufacturers in India, has secured two coal linkages for its cement plants in Maharashtra. The company had participated in the auction of coal linkages for cement sector and won Penganga OC mines and Mana Incline mine in the State.
