Competition Commission of India imposes US$944m fine for cartelisation

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has levied a fine of INR63.2bn (US$944m) on 10 cement companies whom it accuses of conspiring to fix prices in contravention of competition law. In addition, the Cement Manufacturers Association has been ordered to pay a INR7.3m fine. The Times of India reports that JK Cement’s standalone net profit for 2015-16 was down 35.3 per cent on the previous year to INR1.015bn (US$15.1m). Quarterly profits for the period ending 31 March 2016 were up slightly YoY at INR705.6m (US$10.5m). JK Cement resumes production at Karnataka unit, India

JK Cement has resumed production at its 3Mta facility in Baglakot, Karnataka, after operations were temporarily halted when the roof of a clinker silo caved in. JK Cement starts commercial production from Jharli grinding unit, India

JK Cement has started commercial production from its split-grinding unit at Jharli in the northern Indian state of Haryana. The 1.5Mta plant will source its raw material from both internal and external sources such as fly ash from NTPC power plant and clinker from JK Cement’s Nimbahera and Mangrol units. The new facility will help the company serve major markets like Delhi, Haryana and Punjab “more effectively and logistically,” according to a statement posted on the company’s website.
