DG Khan Cement registers with UNFCCC, Pakistan

Pakistan cement producer DG Khan Cement Company Ltd (DGKC) has registered with the United Nations Framework, Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) for the qualification of Carbon Emission Reductions (CERs).

The expected CERs from projects will be approximately 350,000 per annum. This includes the following projects at its two cement plants, Khofli Sattai plant, Dera Ghazi Khan and Khairpur plant, Chakwal:
• waste heat recovery and utilisation for power generation at the Khofli Sattai plant
• waste heat recovery and utilisation for power generation at the Khairpur works
• partial substitution of coal with alternate fuels at Khofli Sattai
• partial substitution of coal with alternate fuels at Khairpur.

According to company, the work on the first phase of Refused Derived Fuel (RDF) and alternative fuels, at the Khairpur cement plant has been successfully completed  and it has started replacing imported coal with different alternative fuels, eg industrial and agricultural wastes, cotton sticks, corn crops,
 rice husk and rice powder, municipal waste etc.

After reviewing the encouraging results of RDF project at the Khairpur cement plant, the company has decided to implement the first phase of RDF at the Dera Ghazi Khan site and also started extension phase at Khairpur cement plant. The  projects are expected to be completed soon. Plant and machinery at Khairpur cement plant will be supplied by FLSmidth of Denmark and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of this year. This project will reduce reliance on power purchase from Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) of Pakisan and bring down the cost of production.
