Local government in Fort Myers (FL), USA, has announced plans to send 30,000t of toxic sludge to LafargeHolcim’s quarry outside of Crystal River, according to the Citrus County Chronicle. The waste material, currently surrounded by a neighbourhood, will be moved to the quarry for pre-treatment before delivery to the company’s plant in Theodore (AL) for use in cement production.

PPM Consultants, the company hired to oversee the sludge's removal, said in a report that a five-gallon sample of the sludge was tested by LafargeHolcim in April and the company deemed it was acceptable for its recycling operation. The plans are expected to begin in October and be completed by the end of the year.
