An investment of MXN400m (US$20m) will be made in the Holcim plant in Ramos Arizpe during 2025 and 2026 under plans to ensure that 80 per cent of its energy comes from recycled waste.

"It will come from waste generated by the industry and instead of ending up in a landfill it will be disposed of responsibly, and with a certified process in the cement kiln, thus eliminating contamination" said José Arturo Castillo, the plant’s director. The plant already sources a significant portion of its energy through waste recycling.

Plans are also underway for the plant to explore hydrogen combustion, a fuel with no carbon footprint. A MXN40m pilot project is due to become operational later this year.

Although more routinely deployed at 85 per cent of its installed cement capacity, the Holcim Ramos recently achieved an all-time production record and is currently at 100 per cent capacity. Around 90 per cent of its market is in Mexico, with roughly a tenth of product being exported to the US, mainly Texas.

Low-carbon concrete

Holcim Mexico has also announced an investment of MXN56m to expand the production and distribution of its low-carbon concrete ECOPact. The company plans to install 27 silos with capacity to store 2600t of sustainable cement, distributed in all of its concrete plants nationwide.

It adds that this investment in integral and sustainable solutions for construction is part of its commitment to achieve a transition to low-carbon buildings and the promotion of the circular economy.
