Heidelberg Materials has announced potential plans to significantly scale down clinker production at its Skovde plant in Sweden by 2027. This shift is a response to sluggish demand in the Swedish construction sector and is part of a broader effort to streamline European operations.

Under the new strategy, the Skovde facility, which currently accounts for roughly 25 per cent of Sweden's cement volume, will pivot its focus toward the final cement product. Meanwhile, the majority of clinker manufacturing will be consolidated at the company's larger site in Slite on Gotland island.

Beyond cost-cutting, the move aligns with Heidelberg’s goal of transitioning its portfolio toward low-carbon products. The company has confirmed it will begin discussions with social partners to manage the organisational changes and potential impact on the workforce.

Earlier this month Heidelberg Materials announced the closure of its Paderborn plant in Germany.
