Domestic cement sales on the Ecuadorian market in the first quarter of 2013 rose by 10.5 per cent YoY while March sales almost reached the half-a-million-tonne mark. Cement sales in Brazil reached 16.1Mt in the first quarter of 2013, a decline of 1.9 per cent from the same period of last year, latest data from local association SNIC shows. Indonesian cement sales rose by 8.6 per cent in the first quarter of 2013 to 13.6Mt, latest data from the country’s largest producer, Semen Indonesia, shows citing figures from the Indonesian Cement Association (ASI). While cement demand in the Southeast Asian country continues an upward climb, cement sales in March only rose by 3.5 per cent YoY to 4.5Mt – the slowest pace in seven months. Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the US and Puerto Rico for January 2013 were up by five per cent to 4.8Mt compared to the same month a year ago, latest data from the US Geological Survey shows. South Africa sales rise by 3% in 2012

South African cement sales edged ahead 2.9 per cent in 2012 to reach 11.6Mt from 11.23Mt the year before, data from the Cement and Concrete Institute (C&CI) shows. For the final quarter of the year, sales were just over 3Mt, also representing an increase of  2.9 per cent on the same period of 2011 when fourth-quarter sales were 2.944Mt. The C&CI will be closing down at the end of April, and as such, these are the last set of statistics to be issued by the institute.

Ube Industries prepares for further growth in domestic demand, Japan

Japanese cement producer Ube Industries is to develop a limestone mine in Yamaguchi Prefecture to prepare for further expected increases in cement demand. This will be the company’s first mine development in 35 years and production is expected to start in 2017, according to a Nikkei Report. Cement consumption in Colombia slipped 2.7 per cent YoY to 823,700t in February, according to Dane, the country’s national statistics bureau. Zambian cement demand is forecast to double over the next 10 years, according to the country’s largest cement producer Lafarge Zambia Cement. Domestic consumption in 2012 is expected to have reached 12Mt, having increased 11 per cent YoY.
