Pakistan: gas price reduction to benefit cement manufacturers

The Federal Minister for Finance, Senator Mohammed Ishaq Dar, approved a gas price reduction at a meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC). The decision will see prices fall from PKR600 to PKR400/mBTU. Lucky Cement, DG Khan Cement and Maple Leaf Cement, each of which operate captive gas-fired power facilities, are set to benefit from the decision with the impact on profitability estimated at 4.1 per cent, 1.6 per cent and 1.2 per cent, respectively.

The steady growth of Pakistan’s cement industry saw the sector attract investment of US$1bn in the current financial year, an economic survey has revealed. Cement producers in Pakistan will invest between US$700m and US$1bn in expanding capacity over the next few years, according to Mohammad Ali Tabba, chair of the All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association. Pakistan producer DG Khan Cement has reported that its southern expansion project is progressing well and is scheduled for commissioning in 2QFY18. ITAC announces final anti-dumping duties

South Africa has imposed final anti-dumping duties on Portland cement originating in or imported from Pakistan, ranging between 14.29 and 77.15 per cent, effective 18 December 2015. DG Khan Cement, part of the Nishat Group, has posted net earnings of PKR7.63bn (US$73.1m) in the year ending 30 June, up 28 per cent compared to full-year earnings of PKR5.97bn in the same period of last year. DG Khan plans to build a US$300m near Karachi as economic growth boosts cement demand in Pakistan. “There will be a shortage domestically in three years if there is 10 per cent growth in demand each year,”  Inayat Ullah Niazi, CEO of DG Khan, told Bloomberg in an interview. Pakistan-based producer DG Khan reported an eight per cent YoY rise net profit to PKR5.96bn (US$58m) for the full fiscal year ending 30 June 2014. The increase in earnings was primarily supported by lower distribution costs and financial charges, according to Global Research.
