Cemex to invest in dust abatement system, UK

Cemex is to spend UK£4m on a state-of-the-art technology abatement system for its South Ferriby plant, UK. Work on the new plant, located on the south bank of the Humber with a capacity of 0.75Mta, is being seen as a sign that that the company, which employs 150 people at South Ferriby, is coming out of the recession. Cementir expands waste management business, Turkey

Cementir Holding, through its fully-owned subsidiary Recydia, operating in the field of waste management and renewables, has signed a 25 year contract to manage and process 700,000tpa of municipal solid waste in Istanbul. This represents 14% of the total municipal waste of the Turkish capital. Total investment will be around EUR28m in two years. Operations are expected to start by the end of 2011 and run-rate EBITDA from 2013 is estimated to be around EUR10m per year.

A rally of over 5000 farmers protesting against construction of a cement plant on wetland in the Bhavnagar district, Gujarat, is continuing almost into its second week. In a victory of sorts for the farmers of Mahuva, the Union ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) on Saturday, stopped all work on the Nirma cement plant. The ministry has also issued a show-cause notice asking why the environment clearance given to the project under the Environment Protection Act should not be revoked, and work on the plant stopped permanently. LafargeCement said on Wednesday it will respect a decision by the Administrative Court revoking the company’s environmental permit, which prohibits it from burning waste material.
