Holcim -EU’s CO2 goal may drive away cement firms

Holcim said a tougher European Union target to cut carbon emissions could force cement companies to relocate overseas. The cement industry contributes about 10 percent of carbon dioxide emissions globally, about four times the contribution from the airline industry. Titan America has appealed judge’s ruling that it must abide by a review process that would delay permits for the plant. The StarNews of Wilmington reported Titan America has appealed the ruling by Superior Court Judge Donald Stephens about the plant it wants to build in Castle Hayne. Stephens last month agreed with environmentalists and ruled that the plant must abide by a more stringent environmental review process because the project is receiving US$4.5m in local and state incentives. ...

Lafarge Hope to burn sewage pellets

Lafarge is proposing to use ’processed sewage pellets’ at Hope Cement Works, between the villages of Hope, Castleton and Bradwell, which already burns unusual items such as chipped rubber tyres and bone meal. UK health officials investigating fears a Flintshire cement factory could be linked to cancer have asked members of the public to share their "concerns". BBC News reported that Health Minister Edwina Hart ordered the investigation into concerns over the Hanson Cement plant at Padeswood. Cemex in Costa Rica has successfully implemented a United Nations-certified Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) that substitutes conventional fossil fuels such as petroleum coke, fuel oil, and natural gas with more environmentally friendly local biomass products such as rice husks and wood chips.
