Sephaku Holdings reports net loss in 1HFY19-20

South Africa’s Sephaku Holdings has reported a loss of ZAR7.7m (US$521,582) for the six months ending 30 September 2019, compared with a ZAR26.5m net profit in the year-ago period. In particular, Sephaku Cement (Dangote Cement) announced a ZAR21.6m net loss against a ZAR44.9m profit in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal. PPC opens material handling facility

PPC Ltd has opened its Port Elizabeth material handling facility in South Africa. The facility is located in Deal Party and is able to handle approximately 400tph of clinker. The new facility also has packaging equipment for cement and has a staff of 44 people. The ZAR60m (US$40.1m) facility was commissioned in August and was officially launched this week. PPC's CFO to step down at the end of the month

South Africa’s PPC has announced that its Chief Financial Officer, Tryphosa Ramano, will step down on 31 October after eight years at the company. Ms Ramano has agreed to take on a consultancy role with PPC to ensure continuity. Ronel van Dijk has been appointed as interim CFO and as an executive director. The news follows Roland van Wijnen taking over as CEO of PPC at the start of this month.

National regulator confiscates Rainbow Power Cement product

Cement imports into South Africa have surged by 293 per cent YoY in July and have also risen by 17.5 per cent since the start of the year. The main source for the cement came from Vietnam during June-July 2019, according to Industry Insight. South Africa’s PPC has failed to submit a bid for the Rwandan government’s 46 per cent stake in cement producer Cimerwa, forcing the government to seek an alternative investor. Dangote Cement is among five companies calling for an investigation into cement imports into South Africa. According to The Concrete Institute (ITC), imports have risen by 139 per cent since 2016.
