Taiheiyo Cement plans PHP15bn expansion project

Taiheiyo Cement is planning to invest PHP15bn (US$309.3m) to expand production at its plant in Cebu, Philippines. The company’s local subsidiary will construct a new line and expand shipping bases to Luzon, Iloilo, and Davao, according to a Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) press release. Japan-based Taiheiyo Cement announced that it would transfer the 71.99 per cent equity stake in its Chinese consolidated subsidiary Qinhuangdao Asano Cement to China's Qinhuangdao Changyang Concrete. A transfer price has not been disclosed, but the transfer is scheduled for the middle of September. Taiheiyo Cement's operating profit rises 17% YoY

Japan’s Taiheiyo Cement announced a 41.8 per cent YoY decline in net profit to JPY3.2bn (US$29.96m) for the quarter ending June 2020. However, operating profit advanced 17.1 per cent YoY to JPY7bn while sales edged downwards by three per cent to JPY200.5bn. The cement sales volumes for its China business decreased due to the impact of COVID-19.

Japan's cement companies are investing to use more plastic waste as fuel to produce cement. Taiheiyo Cement plans to employ new technology for efficiently making coal from plastic and deploy dedicated equipment at nine works in Japan. Japan’s Taiheiyo Cement has seen a 3.5 per cent YoY fall in net sales to JPY884.35bn (US$8.21bn) in the FY19-20 ending 31 March 2020, compared to JPY916.07bn in the previous year. Operating income was also down 7.6 per cent YoY to JPY61bn in the FY19-20, while net income declined 9.9 per cent to JPY39.15bn from JPY43.45bn.

Taiheiyo Cement reported a 1.7 per cent decline in group revenues to JPY431.39bn (US$3.95bn) in the first half of FY19-20 (ended 30 September 2019) from JPY438.7bn in 1HFY18-19. The company’s operating profit decreased 18 per cent to JPY22.46bn YoY while pretax profit fell 17.1 per cent to JPY22.47bn over the period when compared with April-September 2018. Taiheiyo Cement has reported a four per cent increase in revenue to JPY438.7bn (US$3.86bn) in the first half of FY18, ended 30 September 2018. In 1HFY17 the company saw a revenue of JPY421.94bn.
