Building groups praise agreement on Mexican cement

US Construction trade groups are praising an “agreement in principle” to reduce tariffs on cement from Mexico, saying it’s a good step toward reducing shortages and lowering building costs. The agreement, announced by the US Commerce Department last week, will reduce “anti-dumping” duties on imported Mexican cement from $26 per tonne to $3 a tonne, effective April 1. Last year construction costs in Latvia rose by 11.4 percent on average from 2004, which is the steepest rise in ten years, the Latvian statistics bureau said. The statistics bureau said salaries of construction workers saw the most rapid increase growing by 16.1 per cent over the past year. Mexican cement maker Grupo Cementos de Chihuahua SA said Friday it expects to get back about US$40m in disputed cement duties after the US and Mexico settled a 16-year-old antidumping row. Under the agreement announced Thursday, Mexican cement makers will be allowed to export 3Mta to the US with an import tariff of US$3/t, down from US$26/t. Hawaiian Cement and the union that represents 20 of its workers averted a strike early this morning. They tentatively settled on a five-year contract. The strike was expected to start today just after midnight. Union leader Mel Kahele says he expects workers to ratify the contract within the next five days. According to “Tehran Times”, some 386,000t of cement, valued at US$20.1m, was exported from Iran since the beginning of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2005). This showed 12 per cent volume increase in comparison with the same period last year.
