Cement shortage affects construction industry

A shortage of cement in Jamaica is affecting various government projects including the much-touted “Highway 2000” initiative. The Incorporated Master Builders Association (IMBA) said that activities at a number of construction sites have been scaled down due to the shortage. New Indian batching plant

IJM Corporation, a construction company of Malaysia, is setting up Bangalore’s biggest cement batching plant in Whitefield, near the city. The plant will have a capacity of 120 cubic metres per hour. With the setting up of the plant, the company plans to foray into Bangalore’s ready mix cement concrete business. It will also bid for infrastructure projects in Karnataka. IJM has set up a similar plant in Hyderabad to take up various infrastructure projects in Andhra Pradesh.

Japan cement shipments rise

Japan cement shipments totalled 6.29Mt  in October 2005, up 7.6 per cent year-on-year, the Japan Cement Association said on November 28, 2005.  The figure marked a year-on-year increase for the third consecutive month. Portland launches sales drive

The East African Portland Cement company yesterday launched a Sh24 million campaign to advance its penetration of the local cement market. The end user promotion runs until February next year. Managing Director Zakayo Ole Mapelu said the company would use the drive to enhance its relationship with customers as well as win new ones. China cement exports up

China exported 7.9Mt of cement in the first nine months of 2005, up 78.6 per cent year-on-year, it was reported on November 28, 2005. The value of exported cement stood at $283m for the nine-month period. Shandong, Jiangsu and Hebei provinces, all in eastern China, accounted for 6.62Mt of all cement exports for the period January to September 2005, up 108.2 per cent year-on-year. China’s overall cement exports in September 2005 alone stood at 1.37Mt, up 128.6 per cent year-on-year.

Carib Cement to import cement

The management of Caribbean Cement Company has confirmed that it will be importing cement over the next four months in order to address the chronic shortage of the product on the local market. At a press conference Thursday morning, General Manager of the company, Anthony Haynes said 40,000t of cement will have to be imported. Cement exports through the customs of the eastern Chinese port of Longkou, Shandong province, stood at 826,000t in the period January to mid-November 2005, up 176 per cent year-on-year.  The value of exported cement totalled $25.8m, up 225 per cent year-on-year. Peruvian cement sales in October 2005 totalled 456,565t, up 11.4 per cent year-on-year, the cement makers association Asocem said on November 15, 2005.  In September 2005, the cement sales in Peru were slightly higher at 456,907t. In October, Ukranian cement production rose by 17.3 per cent compared with October 2004, to 1,229,000t, the State Statistics Committee has disclosed.
