Mondi acquires paper bag lines from Lafarge Cement Egypt subsidiaries

Mondi Group’s Mondi Paper Bags business unit has purchased paper bag converting lines from National Bag and Egypt Sack, two subsidiaries of Lafarge Cement Egypt . Mannok doubles cement bagging capacity

Mannok, based in Derrylin, Co Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, has invested EUR2.1m in its cement bagging facilities to double the company’s production capacity. Germany-based Haver & Boecker were awarded the contract to design and manufacture a new 10-spout Roto-Packer Adams bag filling system and a new automatic film reel changer. Argos recycled more than 1m bags in Colombia

Colombia-based cement producer Argos recycled more than one million bags of cement last year, thanks to the Green Sacks Programme, which sees a more sustainable production line. “Between 2013, the start date of the programme, and 2019, we have recycled 808t of paper thanks to the return of more than five million bags, thus avoiding the cutting down of more than 8000 trees and saving about 64,000m3 of water, equivalent to 26 Olympic swimming pools,” said David Restrepo, the company’s supply...

Asia Cement launches 25kg bags

Asia Cement has started the production of cement in 25kg bags, according to Esmerk Russian News. The smaller pack size is suitable for small construction works and minor repairs. Bags are made from multilayer microcreped paper with a density of 80gm/m 2 .

Ohorongo signs local packaging deal

Namibia’s Ohorongo Cement has awarded the contract for the supply of 1.2m bags by the end of August to Kaptau Packaging. Kaptau Packaging is reported to be the first Namibian company to produce cement bags. Previously, Ohorongo Cement imported its bags from neighbouring South Africa. The packaging company currently produces the bags in Oshakati, where it employs 25 permanent staff.

Brazil bans 50kg bags for domestic use

The Brazilian cement sector has been given a decade to phase out 50kg bags of cement and replace them with 25kg sacks following an agreement between the country’s cement producers and the government. The step is to protect the health of workers that deliver the bags to work sites and according to the Department of Work “has the aim to bring the Brazilian industry in line with constitutional and international references to protect the health of the worker”. Lipetskcement brings new logistics facility online

Lipetskcement, part of the Eurocement Group, has launched a new RUB600m (US$10.4m) production and logistics facility for packing, palletising and shipping of cement. The investment enables Lipetskcement to ship up to 10,000tpd of cement. The company has increased its loading rate of bulk cement trucks by more than five times. In the packing section, the bagging rate has more than doubled to 2400bags/h.

Cemex is raising a further US$400m through the sale of cement assets in Ohio to Eagle Materials. The deal primarily concerns a 0.9Mta integrated cement works at Fairborn, but also covers a cement terminal at Columbus and a cement bagging operation. These assets are expected to generate a turnover in the region of US$79m and an EBITDA of some US$33m in 2016. The deal is expected to be completed at the turn of the year.
