Cement demand in Argentina fell 16.3 per cent to 873,958t in January 2018, when compared with 1,043,732t in January 2017, according to the latest data from the Argentinian cement association, AFCP. Domestic cement sales in Brazil totalled 4.5Mt in January 2019, according to the National Union of the Cement Industry (SNIC). When compared with January 2018, the latest data reflect an advance of 4.2 per cent. In terms of days worked, domestic sales advanced 2.5 per cent MoM. Indonesia’s cement consumption advanced by 4.8 per cent YoY to 69,565,129t in 2018 from 66,349,944t, according to the preliminary data of the Indonesian Cement Association (ASI). While cement demand declined 5.4 per cent to 4.632Mt in the Jakarta area and slipped by 0.6 per cent in East Java, other regional markets saw significant growth. Moroccan cement consumption rises to 1.17Mt in January

Cement sales in Morocco edged up to 1.17Mt in January 2019 from 1.11Mt in January 2017, according to the country’s cement association, APC. The rise in demand, which follows a market contraction of 3.7 per cent in 2018, has been welcomed with one operator commenting: “The recovery of the cement market is comforting. We hope that this upward trend will continue in the coming months.”

Cement sales in Puerto Rico advanced 13.5 per cent to just over 1m bags of 42.5kg (42,500t) in December 2018 when compared with December 2017, according to the country’s Planning Board. Total Portland and blended cement deliveries in the USA and Puerto Rico advanced by 5.2 per cent YoY to 9.9Mt in October 2018, according to data by the US Geological Survey (USGS). The value of the Romanian cement market is estimated between EUR650m-700m (US$743m-800m) and is primarily supported by three large players: LafargeHolcim, HeidelbergCement and CRH. The three cement majors reported around RON3bn in total sales in 2018, representing a YoY rise of 10 per cent. LafargeHolcim’s Romanian operations were valued at EUR633m, followed by CRH (EUR469m) and HeidelbergCement (EUR410m).

Total cement demand in Vietnam fell to 5.828Mt in December 2018, down by one per cent YoY, but up three per cent when compared with November 2018, according to the latest data by the Vietnam National Cement Association (VNCA). Cement sales in Puerto Rico advanced by 38.9 per cent to 14.3m bags of 42.5kg, or 607,750t in 2018. The figure is the highest reported since 2014 and has been attributed mainly to the island’s reconstruction drive following Hurricane Maria. Cement output reached 13.2m bags, or 561,000t, representing a 44.6 per cent rise YoY when compared with 2017, when production volumes fell by 14.2 per cent, according to Esmerk Latin American News.
