Cement sales down in Canaries

Cement sales on the Canary islands decreased 2.4 per cent in November, when compared with November 2017. Sales reached 52,221t, according to the Canary Statistics Institute. Cement sales fell on the main two islands – by 15.8 per cent to 17,602t on Gran Canaria and by 0.7 per cent to 21,969t on Tenerife. Other islands reported a rise.

DR Congo cement demand up 2% at end June 2018

Cement production in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) at the end of June reached 377,980t, according to the country’s statistics office. This compares with an output of 376,342t in the same period of 2017. Demand for cement in the DRC at the end of June rose 1.6 per cent YoY to 539,474t from 530,820t in 2017. Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the USA and Puerto Rico decreased 4.2 per cent YoY to 8.4Mt in September, according to the latest data from the US Geological Survey (USGS). Cement producers in the Dominican Republic expect to see cement sales increase 4.1 per cent YoY by the end of the year, according to the Dominican Association of Producers of Cement Portland (ADOCEM). Argentina’s cement consumption fell 17.8 per cent to 970,248t in November 2018 when compared with 1.18Mt in November 2017. When compared with the previous month, the decline was 6.7 per cent, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP. The Colombian cement market expanded by 5.2 per cent to 1.083Mt  in October 2018 when compared with 0.949Mt in October 2017, according to the country’s statistics office, DANE. Cement sales in Brazil by domestic producers totalled 44.2Mt in the first 10 months of 2018, and were down 1.5 per cent YoY, according to SNIC, the country’s cement association. Uruguayan 3Q domestic cement sales up 14%

Cement sales in Uruguay increased 14 per cent YoY to 181,000t in the July-September quarter, according to a report by the country’s Chamber of Industries. However, exports fell by 74 per cent to 12,000t during the same period. Around 60 per cent of exports are delivered to Paraguay, followed by Argentina (27 per cent) and Brazil (13 per cent). Imports were negligible in the third quarter of 2018 and in the year to date, accounted for around 8.9 per cent of apparent consumption.

Kenya sees 2% MoM drop in demand

Consumption of cement in Kenya fell 2.2 per cent from 466,909t in August to 456,473t in September 2018, according to a recent report by Kenya National Statistics Bureau. Output followed a similar trend, decreasing by 2.8 per cent from 473,861t to 460,546t over the same period. In the first quarter of FY2018-19, ended 30 September 2018, demand fell 3.7 per cent YoY to 1.3Mt, down from 1.4Mt in July-September 2017.
