Lebanese cement plants call for restart quarries

Cement companies in Lebanon have called on the authorities to authorise the restart of their quarries, which they said activity had been for nearly seven month due to measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Cement prices had reached new heights on the informal market and cement production needed to be restarted, they said. Quarries in northern Lebanon have been particularly affected.

Caribbean Cement Company Ltd (CCCL) plans to extend the Halberstadt Gypsum Quarry from 2ha to 6.7ha and establish a limestone quarry at Harbour Head spanning 50 acres. Cimpor recently made disposals to strengthen its capital base. It has raised EUR32m from the sale of 16 per cent of the equity in Yguazu Cementos in Paraguay, reducing its interest to 51 per cent. In addition, it has  raised US$25.35m through selling the Guarulhos and Barueri quarries in the Brazilian state of São Paulo to Polimix Concreto Ltda.

Philippine quarries set to expand

Four applications for expansion of mining areas have been approved by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) since the government relaxed rules in November last year. "We have already approved several area expansions," MGB Director Leo B Jasareno said in a text message over the weekend.
