Botswana to restrict cement imports

The Botswana Government will restrict cement imports from September 2018. According to the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Bogolo Kenewendo, the step is part of the process aimed at stimulating economic activity and job creation.  "The proposed restrictions would be done through the issuance of import permit after the importer has submitted evidence that indeed they have satisfied the 70 per cent requirement," Mr Kenewendo said.

Cement exports from Pakistan are likely to benefit from the Pakistani rupee depreciation against the US dollar as reported in foreign exchange markets. Pakistani export revenues of cement during the first 10 months of current FY17-18 ended 30 April recorded a YoY fall of 3.6 and 9.4 per cent in terms of quantity and value in dollar, respectively, according to says data released by Federal Bureau of Statistics, Government of Pakistan. The Pakistan cement industry during the first 10 months of outgoing fiscal year July 2017-April 2018 dispatched 38.99Mt of cement compared to 33.880Mt during the same period last year. Cement exports from Tajikistan to Uzbekistan increased by 162,000t in the last year, Exports to Kyrgyzstan were up by 16,800t, but exports to Afghanistan fell by 10,600t (8.8 per cent) in 2017. Pakistan reached its highest-ever capacity utlisation at 93.7 per cent during the 9MFY18 period, ended March 2018. In total, cement dispatches rose 14.7 per cent YoY to 34.75Mt, according to figures supplied by the All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA). Egypt’s cement exports increased 79 per cent in January 2018 to reach US$7m, compared to US$4m in the year-ago period, according to a report from the country's Export Council for Building Materials.
