Serbian Railway Co to enable rail transport for Lafarge Serbian Unit
13 February 2008

Serbia’s state railway operator Zeleznica Srbije will invest EUR16m to reconstruct a railroad that would enable the Serbian unit of French construction materials giant  Lafarge, BFC, to transport its production via rail, media reports showed.

The 17.2km section between the town of Petrovaradin to Beocin, where BFC is based, in Serbia’s northern province of Vojvodina, was closed in early 2007 and its reconstruction should be completed in the spring of 2009.

The authorities of Vojvodina, the region’s administrative centre Novi Sad and Zeleznica Srbije have secured the financing to repair the century-old railroad.

At present, BFC transports its production by road, which increases risks in traffic and raises emissions in the region.
