05 July 2004

Upgrading Yanbu, Saudi Arabia

The Yanbu Cement Company Ltd., Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, placed an order with the KHD Humboldt Wedag AG, Germany, as General Contractor for increasing the clinker capacity of kiln line IV from 7000 to 8500tpd and a further order as consortial leader together with its partners ABB Contracting Company and Dywidag Saudi Arabia Co, both in Saudi Arabia, for the construction of a new cement mill for production line 4 with 190tph capacity in the Ras Baridi works near Yanbu at the coast of the Red Sea.

Both contracts with a total order value of abt. EUR50m were signed in May 2004.

The cement consumption in Saudi Arabia which was continuously increasing in the last years and the expected continuation of this trend make an increase of the capacities of the local cement factories appear a profitable investment. With cement sales of abt. 4.3Mt in 2003 and the expected further rise in 2004, Yanbu Cement essentially contributed to this positive development. To further strengthen their position in the market and to timely participate in the higher demand volume in the country, the company decided to increase the capacity of its modern production facility, line IV.

Production line IV with a capacity of 7000tpd of clinker realised by the KHD Humboldt Wedag AG as turnkey project, started production in 1998. Within the scope of ’stocktaking’ in the plant by experienced process- and plant experts of KHD, in particular the kiln line was identified as starting point for an according capacity increase and alternative measures were suggested.

With the higher clinker production and an additional volume of 20 per cent of pozzolan, the necessity became obvious to increase the capacity of the cement grinding system.

Construction of new 3500tpd clinker production line at Sterlitamak, Russia

The client OAO SODA Sterlitamak in the province of Baschkortosan, Russia awarded KHD Humboldt Wedag AG, Cologne, Germany the contract for engineering, deliveries and construction of a new clinker production plant with a designed capacity of 3500tpd clinker.

The client is a leading producer of soda in Russia und owner of a cement plant with a capacity of 0.7Mta. The new plant, operating as dry process, with an annual capacity of 1Mta will be erected alongside the existing kiln lines. It will be the first dry operating cement plant in Russia after 15 years. Location of the plant is 120km south of the city Ufa.

Sibniiprojektcement Novosibirsk is awarded the contract for overall planning and coordination.

Due to the steadily increasing cement demand in Russia since 1998 and due to the capacity reserve of the existing clinker grinding plant at Sterlitamak plant, the client decided for an upgrade of its clinker production capacity at this plant location.

KHD Humboldt Wedag AG was awarded the contract for the core components of the raw material grinding plant and the pyroprocessing line as well as  for the automation system of the new plant.

Iran gets new 3300tpd cement production

Kerman Momtazan Cement Co., Iran, placed an order with the KHD Humboldt Wedag AG, Germany, for the engineering and supply of a new cement production plant with a production capacity of 3,300 t/d. The plant will be built about 40 km in the West of the province capital Kerman and will have a good connection to the existing infra-structures. Raw material for the production of Portland cement is available at sufficient quantities from local deposits. The fuels used will be heavy oil and natural gas from local resources.
Kerman Momtazan Cement Co., a 100% privately owned Iranian company, is authorised to set up the cement plant with the option of a subsequent capacity increase. The order placed with the KHD Humboldt Wedag AG represents the first construction stage.

When deciding for this partner, the requirement of minimising the time for realising the project and the internal co-ordination expenditure were top priority. On that basis, engineering competence for the overall process and the supply of the entire equipment from one source were the main factors in favour of the KHD Humboldt Wedag AG.

The scope of supplies and services of the KHD Humboldt Wedag AG covers engineering and supply of key components and mechanical equipment for the cement production plant from the raw material crushing department to the cement packing and loading plants. For local manufacturing under the responsibility of the customer, KHD will supply engineering and workshop drawings.
