The German cement industry reported stable alternative fuels usage in 2011, but growth in cement production and fuel consumption meant that the absolute tonnage was higher than in the year before, according to recent figures from the German Cement Works Association (VDZ).

The alternative fuels share in total fuel use stood at 61 per cent in 2011 and 2010.  In 2009, alternative fuels share had stood at 59 per cent and in 2008 at 54 per cent. In absolute terms, the industry used 3.06Mt of SRF in 2011, up from 2.91Mt in the year before.

The amount of cement produced in the German industry's 54 kilns reached about 33.5Mt last year, compared with 29.9Mt in 2010.

The industry's energy consumption increased from 88.1 million GJ to 94.4 million GJ in the same period. SRF accounted for 57.7 million GJ in 2011, up from 53.7 million GJ in 2010.
