After a seven-month hiatus, the Siguaney cement plant, in Sancti Spíritus, Cuba, has restarted production. The repair of its kiln with imported refractory bricks, has now been completed.
The recommissioning of the kiln at Siguaney has enabled the production of clinker, key in supplying the local market with cement and opening up possibilities for supply across a wider area and eventually, cement exports. However, for now, there is a cement shortage despite growing emigration. In 2022 building material prices have increased significantly, in some cases by more than 50 per cent, according to economist Pedro Monreal.
