Cemex Ventures to recycle plastic to produce concrete and aggregates via Arqlite

Cemex Ventures is investing in US-based Arqlite SPC, a start-up that produces light recycled aggregates from plastic waste. The product benefits from a low CO 2 footprint and a greater durability for drainage, precast and lightweight concrete systems for non-structural use. Georgia Power announces coal ash reuse project

USA-based Georgia Power today announced a new beneficial reuse project for coal ash stored at Plant Mitchell, a retired coal-fired power station near Albany. Starting this year, approximately 2Mt of stored coal ash will be removed from the existing ash ponds for reuse in Portland cement manufacture. San Miguel Corp and Aboitz Equity Ventures Inc are using old plastic shopping bags, sachet wrappers and plastic packaging in their asphalt road mix to meet the Philippines' need for its US$157bn ‘Build, Build, Build’ infrastructure programme. Brazil’s Votorantim Cimentos has created a new business unit, named Verdera, to manage and provide services throughout the co-processing chain of alternative materials used in cement production. Cinvestav produce cement using volcanic ash

Scientists at Mexico’s Centre for Research and Advanced Studies (Cinvestav) are using volcanic ash to make environmentally-friendly cement. First tests have shown that cement formulations that work contain up to 80 per cent of volcanic material, without the need for high-temperature kilns. Cinvestav reported that the group has developed some 15 alternatives in the past four year and have applied for a national patent.

Cement companies purchased 0.3Mt of fly ash from Endesa power station

UK and North American cement companies as well as the nearby LafargeHolcim plant have bought some 0.3Mt of fly ash from the Endesa power station in Carboneras, Spain, in 2018. The fly ash is shipped to overseas customers from the port of Endesa Pucarsa. In addition, Endesa has also sold 30,000t of slag and 60,000t of gypsum from its lime plant.

Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) will supply Abu Dhabi-based Arkan Building Materials with waste from its smelting operations. Arkan will co-process EGA’s spent pot lining (SPL) material in its kilns.
