Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the USA and Puerto Rico in December were 6.04Mt, representing a 8.6 per cent YoY fall, according to the US Geological Survey. Puerto Rican cement sales in February slipped 2.3 per cent in February following a 0.2 per cent rise the previous month. Cement sales in Puerto Rica have been declining since 2013 and last year, they contracted by 12.3 per cent YoY. The US Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration announced that Cemex de Puerto Rico has agreed to pay US$291,722 in penalties and implement enhanced safety measures at its three MSHA-regulated facilities in Puerto Rico. Preliminary data from the US Geological Survey shows that Portland and blended cement shipments in January 2016 amounted to 5.3Mt, including 540,000t of imports. This represents a fall of 1.6 per cent on January 2015 but is well above the five-year average of 4.6Mta for January shipments in the period 2011-15. Preliminary data from the US Geological Survey shows that Portland and blended cement shipments in November 2015 reached 7.3Mt including 767,000t of imports. Shipments for the year to the end of November totalled 84.93Mt, the provisional data shows. Of the total, imports represented 8.93Mt. Clinker production in November was 6.76Mt and for the first 11 months of 2015 reached 69.62Mt, according to the preliminary figures.
