Cement sales in Puerto Rico advanced 42 per cent YoY in June, according to date from the country’s Statistics Institute. Sales reached 68,180t in June 2020, compared with 48,138t in June 2019. Puerto Rican cement sales increased 2.1 per cent YoY to 52,824t – the first increase since October and the highest level in seven months, according to the country’s Statistics Institute. Sales of cement in Puerto Rico fell 55.1 and 60.6 per cent in March and April 2020, respectively, according to the country’s Instituto de Estadísticas. In March 2020 526,500 bags of 94lb, or 22,496t were sold while in April the offtake reached 451,300 bags or 19,283t. The drop in sales was attributed to the lockdown and the production stop due to the coronavirus. Cement production fell 59.2 per cent to 493,300 bags (21,077t) in March and 49.5 per cent to 377,200 bags (16,117t) in April.

Cement sales in Puerto Rico declined 20.4 per cent YoY to 36,255t. The drop in demand was attributed to falling levels of construction after Hurricane Maria as government funds and insurance payment finish, according to Sin Comillas. Cement production in January dropped 17.1 per cent to 35,176t, the first reduction in three months. In 2018 full-year output declined 6.7 per cent YoY to 524,443t.

Puerto Rican cement sales in 2019 declined 5.6 per cent to 569,485t in 2019 when compared with 2019, according to Sin Comillas. In 2018 sales had surged 38.9 per cent YoY as construction activity skyrocketed after Hurricane Maria with the arrival of government funds for reconstruction. However, following the rebound, economic activity fell in 2019. Local cement production decreased 6.7 per cent YoY to 518,864t. In 2018 production had increased by 44.6 per cent, the first rise since 2012.
