Fiona sends Puerto Rican cement sales down

Hurricane Fiona has sent Puerto Rican cement sales in a downward spiral as sales in September 2022 dropped by 21.1 per cent YoY to 986,000 bags of 94lb, or 42,041t, the largest fall since 2020, according to Sin Comillas. Domestic cement production declined 17.5 per cent YoY to 509,900 bags, or 21,741t in September 2022. The decrease represents the first fall in six months.

Cement sales in Puerto Rico reached 1.33m bags, or 56,711t, in August 2022. This represents an increase of 5.5 per cent YoY and of 18.8 per cent when compared with August 2019, according to Sin Comillas. Cement output expanded 34.9 per cent YoY to 33,643t in August 2022, up 34.9 per cent YoY. It is the fifth consecutive monthly increase and the largest in three months.

Portland and blended cement consumption in the USA and Puerto Rico increased seven per cent to 10.8Mt in June 2022, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). Puerto Rican cement sales fell 15.7 per cent YoY in July 2022 to 1.12m bags of 42.6kg, or 47,712t, according to the country’s Institute of Statistics. Puerto Rican cement sales up 4% in June

In June 1.35m bags of 42.6kg,or 57,561t, were sold in Puerto Rico. This represents a 3.7 per cent increase when compared with June 2021, according to the country’s Institute of Statistics – the first increase in 13 months. When compared with June 2019, sales were up 19.6 per cent. Cement production advanced 31.5 per cent YoY in June to 860,000 bags, or 36,668t – the third consecutive increase.

Puerto Rican cement sales in May 2022 declined 4.9 per cent YoY to 1.32m bags of 42.6kg, or 56,282t, according to the Puerto Rican Institute of Statistics.
