Puerto Rico sees first fall in sales since April 2020

In June 2021, 1.3m bags, or 55,429t of cement were sold in Puerto Rico, according to the Banco de Desarrollo Económico.  This represents a YoY decline of 18.8 per cent from 68,220t, the first drop in sales since April last year. FY21 ended with a 31.7 per cent advance in sales from 12.4m bags, or 528,707t, to 16.3m bags, or 694,994.51m. The growth in sales is the highest in 12 years, according to Sin Comillas.

Portland and blended cement shipments, including imports, in the USA and Puerto Rico, saw a 19 per cent YoY increase to 9.7Mt in April 2021, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The leading cement-consuming states were Texas, California, Florida, Georgia and Ohio, who accounted for a combined share of 40 per cent of total shipments. Cement sales in Puerto Rico up 12% in May

In May 2021 cement sales in Puerto Rico increased 12 per cent YoY to 59,266t, according to the country’s Economic Development Bank. In the first 11 months of the FY21 639,566t of cement were sold. This represents an advance of 39.2 per cent when compared to 460,487t sold in the 11MFY20, as well as the highest volume since 2014.  In 2020 sales in the Puerto Rican market rose 2.8 per cent YoY to 588,400t.

US shipments see 16% uptick in March

Total shipments for Portland and blended cement, including imports in the USA and Puerto Rico advanced 16 per cent YoY to 9Mt in March 2021, reports the US Geological Survey (USGS). A total of 45 per cent of deliveries was supplied to the leading cement-consuming states – Texas, California, Floria, Georgia and Arizona. Puerto Rican market contracts 13% MoM in April

Puerto Rican cement sales declined 13.2 per cent MoM to 1.37m bags, or 58,414t, in April 2021, according to the country’s statistics institute. In April 2020, 451,000 bags, or 19,230t, were sold following going into lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Domestic cement production fell in April 2021 to 635,000 bags, or 27,075t, after reaching 771,000 bags, or 32,874t, in the previous month.

Cement sales in Puerto Rico reached 66,941t in March 2021, according to the Puerto Rican Institute of Statistics. This represents a 15.9 per cent MoM increase and the highest since June 2020. When compared with March 2020, sales nearly tripled. Cement sales in Puerto Rico advanced 26.2 per cent in February, according the Puerto Rican statistics agency. In February 1.36m bags of 94lb, or 57,987t were sold. Puerto Rican cement sales surged 41 per cent YoY to 51,164t in January 2021, according to Sin Comillas. Cement sales in the country have been rising sharply for nine months. In 2020 deliveries advanced 2.8 per cent to 588,400t when compared with 2019. However, cement output from domestic cement plants dropped 33.2 per cent to 23,493t in January – the sixth-consecutive fall. In 2020 production fell 14.6 per cent YoY.
