Puerto Rican cement sales in 2019 declined 5.6 per cent to 569,485t in 2019 when compared with 2019, according to Sin Comillas. In 2018 sales had surged 38.9 per cent YoY as construction activity skyrocketed after Hurricane Maria with the arrival of government funds for reconstruction. However, following the rebound, economic activity fell in 2019. Local cement production decreased 6.7 per cent YoY to 518,864t. In 2018 production had increased by 44.6 per cent, the first rise since 2012.

Cement sales in Puerto Rico slipped 2.9 per cent to 46,236.3t (1.084m bags of 42.6kg) in November 2019 when compared with November 2018, when 47,630.6t (1.117m bags) were sold, according to data released by the Economic Development Bank of Puerto Rico. Cement sales in Puerto Rico reached 53,570t in October 2019, representing a five per cent increase from 50,973t in October 2019, according to the Instituto Estadísticas de Puerto Rico. Puerto Rican cement sales fell 7.4 per cent in September 2019 when compared with the previous year. A total of 1.02m of 42.5kg bags, or 43,350t was sold on the domestic market, according to Sin Comillas. The latest drop in sales represents the eighth-consecutive month of market contraction. Cement demand in Puerto Rico decreased 11.4 per cent in August, continuing a seven-month period of decline. In August 1.12m bags of 94lb (42.5kg), or 47,600t were sold. Cement output slipped 2.4 per cent YoY to 1.06m bags – the sixth fall in seven months, according to Sin Comillas.
