Accepting the appeals of 18 cement factories, the Lahore High Court on Monday set aside a decision of the Monopoly Control Authority (MCA) to break the cartel and lower the price by Rs60 per bag. The court held that the MCA had no authority to control the prices of cement while it was mandated to act merely as a price regulator.

The Pakistan government is learned to have turned down a proposal of cement manufacturers to provide subsidy on import of clinker, at par with imported cement. Vietnam to end cement imports by 2009

Vietnam will not have to import cement for domestic consumption by 2009, the Vietnam Cement Association said. Cement sales stable despite crisis

Despite the problems which surfaced earlier this year at Caribbean Cement Company, sales figures have not been significantly affected. Minister of State in the Ministry of Industry and Commerce Kern Spencer says the sale of cement for the first half of 2006 was on par with figures for the corresponding period last year. Mr Spencer says cement sales between January and up to July 9 totalled 458,000t which was only two per cent less compared to last year when the figure stood at 469,000t.

GCC foresees bigger exports

Mexico’s cement maker Grupo Cementos Chihuahua (GCC) estimates that, between April this year and March 2007, it would have exported 760,000t of cement, equal to a 15 per cent rise compared to the same period last year, said Manuel Milan, CEO of the company. Exports reach nearly 35 per cent of GCC’s total output in Mexico. The official explained that sales estimates for year-end stand between 6.6 and 6.9 billion pesos, including activities in Bolivia.
