Vietnam sees cement demand pick up

The Vietnam National Cement Association (Vicem) says domestic cement consumption in the first five months of 2014 reached 20.42Mt, up 9.3 per cent on the same period last year. In the last month alone, cement consumption in the country was estimated at 4.87Mt, increasing 12 per cent against May 2013. Vicem’s sales increase boosted by exports

State-owned Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation (Vicem), the country's leading cement producer recorded a seven per cent rise in sales over the first four months of the year boosted by an increase in exports. In the January-April 2014 period, Vicem sold  7.4Mt, surpassing the initial target by 13.5 per cent. Companies in Vietnam sold 6.07Mt of cement in May, up 9.7 per cent from a year ago, including 4.77Mt sold at the domestic market, rising by 11.9 per cent YoY, the Vietnam Building Material Department under the Ministry of Construction has said. Vietnam is estimated to have produced 5.5Mt of cement in May, up four per cent from April and 9.8 per cent from a year ago, according to data from the government’s General Statistics Office (GSO) said.?? Vietnam exported 8.38Mt of cement and clinker worth US$355m in the first four months of this year, up 41 and 43 per cent in terms of volume and value, respectively, the General Department of Vietnam Customs said. The total included 6.2Mt of clinker and 2.2Mt of cement, the department said on its website Tuesday. Vietnam is estimated to have produce 6Mt of cement in April, up seven per cent from March and 12.65 per cent from a year ago, the government’s General Statistics Office (GSO) said. Vietnam sold 10.23Mt of cement in the domestic market in the first quarter of this year, up eight per cent from a year ago, the Ministry of Construction (MoC) said. Anhui Conch Cement Co reported a 48.3 per cent YoY increase in profit attributable to shareholders during 2013 to CNY9.38bn (US$1.5bn) from CNY6.33bn a year ago. Turnover increased 20.75 per cent to CNY55.26bn from CNY45.77bn in 2012.
