The Togolese Association of Consumers (TAC) has asked the government to publish the price structure of cement and called for the establishment of a regulatory authority for the cement sector in the country.
Despite the national production of the three producers (Cimtogo, WACEM, Fortia) at around 1.5Mta, the supply of cement is experiencing every year severe shortages and speculation about the price,” according to ATC Secretary General, Aladjou Agouta.
"Against this situation, ATC is calling on the government to stand out from any attempt at protectionism against cement producers in Togo," said Agouta, who is urging import quotas for " Other suppliers in order to promote competition in the sector.”
The ATC opposes a decision by the Togolese authorities that require the Nigerian cement company Dangote to align its selling prices with those of the Togolese cement manufacturers. Dangote Cement should sell its cement at XOF60,000 (US$98.50)/t in Togo, but authorities demand that it be sold at CFA80,000/t.
