The price of petcoke imported to India has risen to a multi-year high in March. This has been attributed to both increased demand and a supply shortage because of maintenance work undertaken by refiners, reports Mint.

"Indian demand for petcoke is around 23-24Mta, while domestic supplies total up to around 14Mta. Suppliers are not in a rush to sell into the Indian market for there is some healthy demand from other regions like Latin America," said Deepak Kannan, managing editor of Asia Thermal Coal, S&P Global Platt.

According to research undertaken by Indiainfoline, the first two weeks of March have seen prices fall across the country in every region except the eastern markets. The all-India average is down two per cent YoY and four per cent MoM, with the sharpest decline recorded in the northern region. Usually prices begin to pick up in March, however this result marks the largest MoM price drop in 15 years.
