Ohorongo signs local packaging deal

Namibia’s Ohorongo Cement has awarded the contract for the supply of 1.2m bags by the end of August to Kaptau Packaging. Kaptau Packaging is reported to be the first Namibian company to produce cement bags. Previously, Ohorongo Cement imported its bags from neighbouring South Africa. The packaging company currently produces the bags in Oshakati, where it employs 25 permanent staff.

Brazil bans 50kg bags for domestic use

The Brazilian cement sector has been given a decade to phase out 50kg bags of cement and replace them with 25kg sacks following an agreement between the country’s cement producers and the government. The step is to protect the health of workers that deliver the bags to work sites and according to the Department of Work “has the aim to bring the Brazilian industry in line with constitutional and international references to protect the health of the worker”. Lipetskcement brings new logistics facility online

Lipetskcement, part of the Eurocement Group, has launched a new RUB600m (US$10.4m) production and logistics facility for packing, palletising and shipping of cement. The investment enables Lipetskcement to ship up to 10,000tpd of cement. The company has increased its loading rate of bulk cement trucks by more than five times. In the packing section, the bagging rate has more than doubled to 2400bags/h.

Cemex is raising a further US$400m through the sale of cement assets in Ohio to Eagle Materials. The deal primarily concerns a 0.9Mta integrated cement works at Fairborn, but also covers a cement terminal at Columbus and a cement bagging operation. These assets are expected to generate a turnover in the region of US$79m and an EBITDA of some US$33m in 2016. The deal is expected to be completed at the turn of the year.
