Cementos Argos sets up waste recycling company

Colombian cement producer Cementos Argos announced the creation of Granulados Reciclados de Colombia, a company that will recycle construction waste into aggregates, bases and subbases. The new firm will operate from Argos' Cota plant in Cundinamarca and will process up to 200tph of waste into wood, metal, plastic and stone as well as up to 1Mta of construction waste.

Cement consumption in Colombia increased 3.6 per cent from 993,700t in October 2016 to 1,029,400t in October 2017, according the country’s statistics office, DANE. The rise has been attributed to increased retail sales (+5.4 per cent) and off-take by construction companies and contractors (+5.6 per cent). Sales to concrete companies slipped by 4.1 per cent. Cementos Argos reports in its 3Q17 results that consolidated cement volumes reached 4.2Mt, with a 16.7 per cent increase driven by positive dynamics in the company's operating regions and the consolidation of the Martinsburg plant operation. Grey cement consumption in Colombia in August 2017 reached 1.033Mt, down 5.2 per cent when compared with August 2016, according to the national statistics office, DANE. Some 68 per cent of volumes, or 702,300t, were delivered in bagged form. The country's cement producers manufactured 1.035Mt of cement in August 2017, which represents a 8.5 per cent YoY decrease. Cemex announced that it has received de Sello Verde de Verdad (True Green Label), granted by Colombian company Ecologic SAS, and the certification of neutralisation of transport-related GHG emissions in Colombia, issued by the Colombian Institute of Technical Standards and Certification (ICONTEC Internacional). Grupo Argos has sold its 50 per cent stake in a port operator to an investment fund managed by Goldman Sachs for about US$136m, Grupo Argos said in a statement on Monday.
