DR Congo cement demand weakens in 10M19

Grey cement consumption in the Democratic Republic of Congo reached 390,279t in the first 10 months of 2019, according to ACP. Production reached 959,088t during the same period. The low demand reflects the slowdown in construction work in the building and public works sector. In 2018 cement demand reached 1,045,199t and domestic production 1,043,340t, according to Central Bank of Congo.

Brazilian cement sales reach 54.5Mt in 2019

Domestic cement sales in Brazil advanced 1.6 per cent YoY to 4Mt in December 2019, according to the country’s National Cement Industry Union (SNIC). In terms of sales per business day there was a 2.7 per cent YoY rise when compared with 2018. Apparent consumption in December was up 1.5 per cent YoY to 4Mt. Nomura has increased its 2020 demand growth forecast for China from three per cent to five per cent following expectations that Beijing will continue to support its property and infrastructure sectors. Argentinian cement sales dropped 6.1 per cent to 11.1Mt in 2019 compared with 11.89Mt in 2018, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP. No cement was imported during the year, while exports increased 23.4 per cent YoY to 100,197t. The falling sales for the year has been attributed to an economic recession and Argentina's currency devaluation. Gabon cement output jumps 21% in 9M19

Cement production in Gabon has increased by 20.7 per cent in the first nine months of 2019, according to DirectInfosGabon. Output from CIMAF and CimGabon reached 421,356t. Cement sales advanced by 17.7 per cent to 413,604t due to strong local demand, mainly from the self-build sector during the dry season. Cement company revenues were up 15.8 per cent YoY to XAF39.864bn (US$68m).

Chile’s cement market contracted by eight per cent in October 2019 to 337,959t from 367,167t in October 2018, according to the Chilean construction chamber (CChC). However, MoM demand advanced 8.6 per cent from 311,328t in September 2019. In the first 10 months of 2019 cement consumption advanced 3.9 per cent from 3.273Mt in 10M18 to 3.401Mt.
