Cimpor to install solar plants at its Portugal works

Portugal’s Cimpor has announced that it will install a photovoltaic plant at each of its three production units in the country. The project is part of an investment package that could exceed EUR130m over the next decade. It will see the installation of 1MW of power for self-consumption at each plant, with the conclusion of the installation expected by the end of the year. Cimpor, the Iberian region's leading producer of cement, has called upon FLSmidth to deliver a chlorine bypass solution for its site in Souselas, Portugal. Taiwan's cement sector saw tremendous growth in 2020, after the country acted rapidly and very successfully to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. Cement consumption rose from 9.48Mt in 2019 to 10.07Mt in 2020, a rise of 6.2 per cent, according to data released by the Taiwan Cement Manufacturers' Association. Semapa sees 182% rise in 4Q20 net profit

Portugal-based Semapa recorded a net profit of EUR106.6m in 2020, a 14.1 per cent YoY decrease from EUR124.1m a year earlier. In the 4Q20, net income surged 182.3 per cent YoY to EUR33.8m. Consolidated turnover was down 16.2 per cent YoY to EUR1867m in 2020, of which EUR451m came from its cement segment. EBITDA reached EUR419.3m, falling 13.9 per cent from EUR486.8m in 2019, despite the group's positive developments in cement, which grew 15.3 per cent YoY, especially in Portugal.

Secil Group has awarded thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions SAS (France) a contract for the modernisation of its 2Mta Outão cement plant in Setúbal, south of Lisbon, Portugal. To help reduce its indebtness, InterCement is leaving the European market. Portuguese billionaire Pedro Queiroz Pereira, whose holding company Semapa controls paper and pulp producer The Navigator Company and cement maker Secil, died on Saturday aged 69, an official spokesman said.
