Cement consumption in India doubled between 2005 and 2015, but still lags behind China’s at a comparable stage of development. Peru: cement market expands 1.8% YoY in April

Peru’s cement demand increased 1.8 per cent YoY in April to 781,000t, according to the country’s cement association, Asocem. This reversed the previous month’s fall of 1.4 per cent. Cement output in April expanded by 7.5 per cent YoY to 831,000t. Some 29,000t of this volume was exported, reflecting an eight per cent decrease when compared with April 2015. In addition, 23,000t of clinker was exported – some 17 per cent below the April 2015 level.

Argentina: cement sales fall by over a quarter

Argentina’s cement market contracted 27.6 per cent YoY in April 2016, according to the latest data from Asociación de Fábricas de Cemento Portland (AFCP). Total cement sales, including exports, fell 31 per cent during the period. The fall in domestic sales has been attributed to the economic recession and the decision by the government to delay key infrastructure works. Rep of Congo: Cimenterie de Lukala to close down

Cimenterie de Lukala (CILU), located in the Republic of Congo, will be closing down due to “the unfair competition it has faced since December 2015”, according to its CEO, Ola Ora. The factory had been running at capacity utilisation rates of below 50 per cent in recent times. The country’s government had allowed conditional imports of cement into the Republic of Congo. Domestic cement demand is estimated at around 3Mt, but local production is limited to 0.5Mt.

According to PPC, cement consumption in South Africa reached 13Mt in 2015, up 7.7 per cent on the previous year. The growth is attributed to strong demand from the construction sector, particularly projects involving new power stations and hydroelectric plants. The opening quarter of the year saw the fastest sales growth YoY with 15.6 per cent. The second quarter was far more subdued with 1.5 per cent but was followed by more than seven per cent expansion in the last two quarters of the year...

PCA revises down 2016 US consumption forecast

Cement consumption in the United States will continue to rise by 3.4 per cent, according to a report from the Portland Cement Association (PCA).
