Caribbean Cement sees sales increase 11% in 9M20

Jamaica’s Caribbean Cement has seen its sales rise 11.1 per cent YoY to JMD15bn (US$102.8m) in the 9M20, compared to JMD13.5bn in the year-ago period. The company’s gross profit of JMD7bn from the first nine months of this year equates to what the company made in the full-year 2019 period, according to the Jamaica Gleaner.  In the third quarter of 2020, the company saw profits reach JMD1.2bn from JMD5.8bn of revenue. Cemex reported significant disruption from COVID-19 in 2Q20. Sales declined by 10 per cent YoY and EBITDA fell by six per cent to US$554m. These decreases were attributed to lockdown measures. Cement sales in the Dominican Republic declined 13 per cent to US$120m in the January-April 2020 period when compared with June 2019. In the first three months of 2020, Argos (Grupo Argos) reported revenues of COP2.2trn (US$5.6bn), a figure that remains stable when compared to 2019. Caribbean Cement Co Ltd increased its export sales threefold YoY in 2019, including markets such as Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. The Dominican Republic exported Portland cement to the value of US$72.3m in 2018, according to the country’s Director of General Direction of Mining, Alexander Medina Herasme. The country produces cement in four clinker and two grinding plants with a combined capacity of 7.15Mt. It is the Caribbean’s largest cement and clinker exporter, accounting for around two-thirds of the region’s cement exports.

CCJ rules in favour of reducing tax on imported hydraulic cement

The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) has ruled that the regional tax, known as the Common External Tariff (CET), payable on cement categorised as ‘other hydraulic cement’ should be set at five per cent.
