Sample preparation meets digitisation

26 October 2021, Published under Cement News

Process sample analysis is increasingly important in the cement industry. The preparation of samples is key to ensure rigorous quality control of a range of materials, from raw materials to the finished products. An automatic combination of mill and press can speed up this process significantly. By Marc Bornefeld, Andre Mehling and Jan Herzog, Herzog Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co KG, Germany. Measuring systems for CCUS

25 October 2021, Published under Cement News

Following the Paris climate agreement (2015), the decarbonisation of the energy and industrial sectors is becoming increasingly important. One of the most significant measures to achieve the climate targets is to reduce carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions. The capture, use and storage of CO 2 is an essential part of the decarbonisation strategy and an important milestone for a low-carbon future. By Aurélie Moll and Felix Bartknecht, SICK, Germany. The future of process control

12 October 2021, Published under Cement News

The global task to ensure sustainable clinker and cement production has increased the complexity of plant operations. New process control technologies, including online reactivity measurements, contribute to the production of robust clinker and cement with minimum GHG emissions. Neural networks and AI are the first choice when managing large arrays of process and quality data. A new approach is essential to overcome time gaps from process control to systematically delayed compressive strengt...

Belterra clay could replace limestone in cement production

11 October 2021, Published under Cement News

In a study, funded partly by the Brazilian Ministry of Education, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), Germany, and Brazil’s University of Pará, have found that CO2 emissions can be reduced during cement production by up to two-thirds by adding Belterra clay, unused overburden from bauxite mining. "This layer of clay can be up to 30 metres thick and covers the bauxite deposits in the tropical regions of the earth, for example in the Amazon basin," explains Professor Herbert Pöl...

Optimised fuel metering for Solnhofer Portland Zement

05 October 2021, Published under Cement News

As a result of the increased use of substitute fuels at Solnhofer Portland Zement’s plant in Germany, the existing pulverised coal dosing system was increasingly reaching its limits both in terms of range and dosing accuracy. Furthermore, it was foreseeable that the fly ash used for dusting the animal meal would no longer be available. Therefore, the cement producer decided to carry out a complex conversion of its fuel dosing system. By Intercem Engineering, Germany. Figure 1: coal du...

Germany: decarbonising the industry in a stable market

04 October 2021, Published under Cement News

While the outlook for the German cement sector is expected to stay positive, all forces are now focussed towards achieving climate targets. With 2050 still far in the future, the industry is building on introducing cements with lower clinker factors to the market, and initiating first pilot and demonstration plants for capturing CO 2 . It is already clear that this immense transformation process cannot be achieved by the industry alone but needs strong support from policymakers and, finally,...

Märker Zement's new kiln is lifted into position

04 October 2021, Published under Cement News

SGS Industrial Services GmbH has announced that the next major steps at the construction site in Harburg, Germany, for Märker Zement’s new kiln line have been achieved. The local SGS team successfully lifted the first part and second part of the new rotary kiln. The first part alone had a length of 36m and a weight of 190t, and the second had a length of 25m and weighed 120t. With two mobile cranes the two parts were lifted and positioned.

Creating an appropriate cement industry transformation framework

14 September 2021, Published under Cement News

The recently published “Environmental Data of the German Cement Industry 2020” reveals how cement manufacturers in Germany aim to meet the latest environmental policy targets. The agenda is headed by three major topics: Climate neutrality by 2050, the preservation of primary raw materials and air pollution control.   The road to climate neutrality will involve the cement industry having to reduce its CO 2 emissions to an unprecedented extent. “What we urgently need now to continue on ou...

Burglengenfeld to use FCT Turbu-Flex burner

09 August 2021, Published under Cement News

In June FCT Combustion delivered a Turbu-Flex™ burner to HeidelbergCement’s Burglengenfeld plant in Germany. The Turbu-Flex™ burner is designed to fire very high levels of alternative fuels. The targets of the project are to maximise the use of alternative fuels as well as to improve combustion control. The Burglengenfeld plant is using coal and petcoke firing. The new burner will offer multi-fuel capabilities for liquid and solid alternative fuels and flexibility for quick fuel changes w...
