Swiss 1Q cement sales fall 2% YoY

Domestic deliveries in Switzerland declined by 2.2 per cent in the first quarter of 2018, according to the country’s cement association, Cemsuisse. Volumes decreased from 853,180t in 1Q17 to 834,252t in 1Q18 as cold weather in March extended the winter period and fewer working days affected cement demand.

LafargeHolcim announces five-year strategy

LafargeHolcim has announced its new five-year strategy to grow faster than the overall market and cut costs. The plan targets an annual sales growth of 3-5 per cent, recurring EBITDA growth of at least five per cent, improvement in free cash flow to over 40 per cent of EBITDA and increasing the return on invested capital to over eight per cent, according to Reuters. Swiss cement sales slip 3% in 2017

Cement deliveries in Switzerland saw a 2.8 per cent fall to in 2017 as Cemsuisse reports a domestic sales volume of 4.3Mta. The drop follows a 4.2 per cent rise in 2016. The initial drop in the 1H17 was partly absorbed in the 2H17, but the 4Q17 saw a 0.8 per cent decline. Cemsuisse said the share of rail transport increased YoY to account for 53.3 per cent of all deliveries.

LafargeHolcim in talks with PPC

LafargeHolcim announced that it is in talks with the board of directors of PPC regarding a possible transaction in Africa. “No agreement with PPC has yet been reached and no assurance can be given at this stage that a transaction will materialise,” said the building materials producer in a brief statement.  

Swiss Cement distribution falls by 2.7% in 3Q17

Deliveries of Swiss cement in the 3Q17 saw a slight decrease in shipments of 2.7 per cent compared with the same period last year. Compared with the 2Q17, sales were down further at -4.7 per cent.  At the end of September, total YtD shipments were down by 3.5 per cent compared to the previous year.

EU and Switzerland link emissions trading systems

The EU and Switzerland are joining their respective emissions trading systems following the adoption of the European Commission of two proposals to finalise an agreement between the two parties. LafargeHolcim reported improved sales and operating EBITDA adjusted for the second quarter of 2017 on a like-for-like (LFL) basis but has revised down forecasts for growth in its global cement markets, notably due to weaknesses in southeast Asian countries and Nigeria.
