Lafarge Zambia posts losses of ZMW12.3m in 1H20

Lafarge Zambia Plc has posted losses of over ZMW12.3m (US$615,000) during its financial half-year period ending 30 June 2020. The company saw increased production costs and the local kwacha currency devalued during the period. Lafarge Zambia will continue to focus on developing the export market to sustain its growth as the domestic market remains substantially oversupplied with the commodity.

Cement prices in Malawi have reportedly increased by 33 per cent in the past two weeks to MWK8000 (US$10.79) per 50kg bag, with the hike attributed to a shortage, according to The Business Times (Malawi). Dangote Cement reported group revenue up two per cent to NGN476.9bn (US$1.23bn) in the 1H20. Group EBITDA rose to NGN218.1bn and pan-African EBITDA increased by 31.6 per cent to NGN31.5bn. Lafarge Zambia's CEO, Jimmy Khan, has spoken out about the crippling overcapacity in Zambia's cement market. New limestone discovery in Zambia attracts cement plant interest

The recent discovery of limestone in Nyimba district, Zambia, is anticipated to attract cement plant investors to the mineral resource-rich district, Eastern Province regional mining survey officer Brian Nyambe has said.
