Total Portland and blended cement shipments in the USA and Puerto Rico in October increased 4.9 per cent YoY in October 2017, according to data from the US Geological Survey (USGS). The output of Iran’s cement industry fell by 3.7 per cent YoY to 28.5Mt for the first six months of the current financial year (started 20 March 2017), according to Trend News Agency. LafargeHolcim Algeria celebrated its first export of grey cement from the port of Arzew to a west African country in a ceremony held on 12 December. Cement consumption in Peru totalled 0.902Mt in November, representing a 2.5 per cent YoY rise but a MoM drop of 2.5 per cent, according to Asocem, the country’s cement association. Indian clinker exports to Nepal are facing a challenge from the residents of the border town of Raxaul. They have threatened to prevent Nepal-bound cargo trucks from passing through the customs point from 25 December unless the authorities find a solution to reduce the pollution caused by the transport of clinker. Vietnam is expected to increase its supply glut in the run-up to 2020, according to Vietnam Net. By 2020 total domestic cement capacity is expected to reach 120-130Mta while domestic demand is forecast to increase by 5-6Mta to reach 82Mt by 2020. This would result in an oversupply of 36-47Mt. Cement plants in Pakistan reached 94.65 per cent capacity utilisation during the July-November period of 2017, according to The Nation. In November 2017 the country recorded a 9.89 per cent increase in domestic consumption.
