Fly ash transported through India's inland water highway

As part of an ongoing project to establish a water highway route, the Inland Waterways Authority of India has successfully transported 1235t of fly ash from NTPC’s power facility in Bihar to Pandu, Assam. Sagar Cements records 27% production increase in September

India’s Sagar Cements has reported that its consolidated cement production increased 27.2 per cent in September 2018, rising to 256,507Mt from 201,690Mt. Furthermore, consolidated cement sales advanced 21.8 per cent to 249,882Mt, compared with 205,097Mt of the year-ago period.

The Kerala State Cement Dealers’ Welfare Association (KSCDWA) is expected to request that the government forms a regulatory committee with cement companies to moderate prices in the state. Until last month cement was available for INR355-360/50kg bag (US$4.81-4.88/50kg bag). However, this has now increased to INR395-440/50kg bag. JSW Cement begins work on 1.2Mta grinding unit

India’s JSW Cement has begun construction of a 1.2Mta grinding unit at the Kalinganagar Industrial Complex in Jajpur, Odisha, which will be used for the production of Portland slag cement and GGBS. Petron Engineering Construction won the INR600m (US$8.2m) contract for civil and structural work, while the State Environment Impact Assessment has provided clearance for the project. The unit is expected to be operational in September 2020.

Nuvoco Vistas appoints new MD

India’s Nuvoco Vistas Corp Ltd has announced the appointment of Jayakumar Krishnaswamy as its managing director with immediate effect. Mr Krishnaswamy will be responsible for the company’s three business divisions of cement, ready-mix and aggregates. Mr Krishnaswamy had previously worked as the managing director of AkzoNobel India, a paints and coating manufacturing company, and was responsible for its operations in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan, according to a press release.

Cement demand rises in southern India

Cement demand in southern India is increasing alongside growth in infrastructure and housing, according to N Srinivasan, chairman, India Cements. "After a long time cement demand is slowly picking up in the south, which has the problem of capacity overhang having 160Mt (out of a total capacity of 400- 425Mt in the country) against the demand of around 70- 80Mt," said Mr Srinivasan.
