Cuba’s Siguaney produces first low-carbon cement

15 August 2013, Published under Cement News

Siguaney saw its first low-carbon cement produced on an industrial scale. The Cuban cement plant in Sancti Spíritus delivered a pilot output of 130t of SIG-B45 cement, according to the Structures & Materials R&D Centre (CIDEM) director, Fernando Martirena. The development of the so-called Ecological Cement started in May with the firing of 120t of kaolin of the Pontezuela quarry in Camagüey. "The first phase successfully concluded on 3 April 2013, and in June we found that all the paramet...

CSI reports encouraging carbon reduction data

16 July 2013, Published under Cement News

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD)’s Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) has published the latest update to the ‘Getting the Numbers Right’ database, which shows significant CO2 emissions reductions and improved efficiency.   As the cement industry’s global database of CO 2 emissions and performance, the latest ‘Getting the Numbers Right’ (GNR) data for 2011 shows that the industry has reduced its specific net CO 2 emissions per tonne of cementitious product ...

Vicat starts production tests for new cement type

21 June 2013, Published under Cement News

France-based cement producer Vicat has started testing to produce a new low-carbon cement, Alpenat, on an industrial scale in its Créchy dans L’Allier factory. After several years of research the group confirms that it has developed a new cement “with a lower carbon footprint and high technical performance”.The new cement is reported to cut CO2 emissions by 30 per cent.  The industrial-scale tests will run for 10 days and the company expects an output of around 10,000t of cement.

Lafarge completes trials for new generation low-carbon cement

17 January 2013, Published under Cement News

Lafarge has successfully completed an industrial trial for Aether®, its new-generation clinker formulated for lower-carbon cements. The trial mobilised a team of around 100 people over a 10-day period at the Group's plant in Le Teil, France. It allowed the production of 10,000t of Aether® clinker, confirming the feasibility of industrial-scale production using traditional raw materials. The launch of the first Aether® products is planned for 2014. Aether®, a new clinker formulation to red...

Low carbon cement adds to Pembroke’s green credentials, UK

15 January 2013, Published under Cement News

The new 2160MW natural gas power station in Pembroke boosted its green credentials during the construction phase through the use of low-carbon Phoenix Portland fly-ash cement (BS EN 197-1 CEM II/B-V 42,5N) produced just 90 miles away which incorporated  fly-ash from its sister power station. Operator RWE npower worked closely with Aberthaw-based CelticAsh and Lafarge Tarmac’s Cement Works at East Aberthaw during the plant’s construction phase to overcome a number of tricky technical chall...

Multi-component cements

04 June 2012, Published under Cement News

Given increasingly-stringent environmental legislation, cement producers are actively seeking to reduce their CO2 emissions. One way of lowering such emissions is by reducing the clinker factor in cement. While adding a further component to clinker is nothing new, more recently, cement companies have started to consider a more flexible approach, adding more than one component. This is giving rise to ‘multi-component’ cements. Reiner Härdtl of Heidelberg Technology Center, Germany, explains. ...
