New plant to be constructed in Libya

Libya’s National Mining Corp and Al-Shahba Cement Co have signed an agreement to construct a 1Mta cement works in Al-Shahba, south of Tobruk. The Minister of Industry and Minerals, Ahmed Abuhisa, laid the foundation stone for the establishment of the cement factory on Thursday.

Morocco’s cement deliveries expand 31% in August

Cement deliveries by Moroccan cement producers Asment Temara, Ciments de l’Atlas, Ciments du Maroc and LafargeHolcim Maroc advanced 31.1 per cent YoY to 1,132,899t from 864,441t in August 2020, according to Ipsos data published by the country’s Ministry for Housing and Urbanisation. In the first eight months of 2021 deliveries were up 19.3 per cent to 8,841,024t from 7,411,847t in the January-August 2020 period.

LafargeHolcim Maroc sees 66% rise in 2Q revenue

LafargeHolcim Maroc saw a 66 per cent rise in revenues to MAD2078m (US$232.4m) in the second quarter of 2021 from MAD1252m in the 2Q20. The positive trend has been attributed mainly to the increase in sales across the board. In the first half of 2021 revenues increased by 26 per cent YoY to MAD4000m from MAD3185m in the 1H20. The company’s debt fell by 10 per cent YoY to MAD5952m at 30 June 2021.

Misr Cement (Qena) posts 9% profit increase

Egypt’s Misr Cement (Qena) has recorded a 9.2 per cent YoY advance in consolidated net profit for the January-June period of 2021, rising to EGP69m (US$4.39m) from EGP63m in the 1H20. However, net revenue declined 4.7 per cent to EGP1.28bn from EGP1.34bn. The company has attributed the increase in profitability to improved efficiency and total exports, which climbed 316 per cent YoY to 169,000t from 41,000t in the first half of 2020.

Morocco’s cement market slips 16% in July

Cement sales in Morocco declined 16.3 per cent YoY  to 898,429t in July 2021 from 1,073,680t in July 2020, according to the Ministry of Housing and Urbanisation, which cites data from the country’s cement association, APC. However, in the January-July 2021 period, sales advanced 17.7 per cent to 7.708Mt when compared with the 6.547Mt in the 7M20.

Arabian Cement Co sees net loss widen in 1H21

Egypt’s Arabian Cement Co has seen its consolidated net loss after tax widen to EGP23.28m (US$1.48m) in the first half of 2021, compared to EGP5.63m in the year-ago period. Sales revenue declined 26.9 per cent YoY to EGP964.86m from EGP1.32bn in the 1H20.

Carthage Cement posts 61% rise in turnover

Tunisia’s Carthage Cement has posted a 61 per cent YoY rise in turnover to TND163.8m (US$59.09m) for the first half of 2021, against TND102m in the same period of last year. Clinker production increased 99 per cent to 829,000t and cement production was also up 48 per cent to 612,000t in the second quarter of 2021. Local market turnover in the 2Q21 advanced 69 per cent YoY to TND123m. Revenue from cement exports reached TND17m during the 1H21, up from TND0.7m in the year-ago period.

Tunisia’s Les Ciments de Bizerte has reported a TND421,000 (US$152,235) net loss in the year ended 31 December 2020, against a TND9.4m net loss in the previous year.
