Disappointing trend continues in Japan

Japan cement sales shrank 5.5 per cent YoY in the first month of 2024, marking a continuing trend. Sales were 2.389Mt in January, down from 2.527Mt a year earlier, according to the Japan Cement Association (JCA). Arabian Cement Co has confirmed that it will impose a delay damage penalty of five per cent on CNBM International Engineering Co for the Saudi cement producer’s new mills at its Rabigh plant. SungShin Cement swings into the black in 2023

South Korea-based SungShin Cement reported a preliminary and unaudited revenue of KRW1.113trn (US$832,886) in 2023, up from KRW1.03trn in 2022. The company’s operating profit surged from KRW1.83bn in 2022 to KRW77.73bn in 2023 while net profit reached KRW65.75bn in 2023, a significant turnaround when compared with a loss of KRW26.47bn in 2022. SungShin operates the 11.3Mta Danyang integrated plant in Danyang-gun and the 0.5Mta Bugang grinding unit in Cheongwon-gun.

Saudi Arabia-based Eastern Province Cement Co has awarded the contract for a new cement production line to China’s Sinoma CDI. Taiwan Cement completes share agreement for Denizli Çimento

Taiwan Cement Corp  has finalised its agreement with OYAK Çimento to acquire a further 20 per cent stake in Denizli Çimento ,Turkey. According to Reuters this will boost Taiwan Cement's share in the company to 60 per cent. The preliminiary Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding the deal was signed in November this year. Reuters has assigned Denizli Çimento a total enterprise value of US$1.42bn.

Taiwan Cement Group has commissioned a 311MWh battery at its HePing plant in Hualien County, Taiwan. South Korea’s anti-dumping duty on white Portland cement from Egypt has begun. The 72.23 per cent levy started on 15 November 2023 and will last for four months. The move is designed to protect Korea’s local industry from imports after Korean white cement producer Union filed a complaint to the Korea Trade Commission in March this year against Egypt’s Royal El Minya Cement and Albatros International Cement Trading. CNBM issues 9M23 profit warning

China National Building Material (CNBM) has issued a profit warning for the opening nine months of 2023. According to Reuters, the company expects to report a 70 per cent YoY contraction in profits over the nine-month period. The decline has been blamed on falling cement prices.

Universal Cement reports 11% increase in 9M revenue

Taiwan-based Universal Cement Corp report a 3.6 per cent advance in revenues to TWD618.592m (US$19.28m) in September 2023 from TWD597.159m in September 2022. In the January-September 2023 period the company increased its revenue by 11.1 per cent to TWD5627.754m from TWD5063.948m in the 9M22.
