Hanson is to spend GBP25m (US$31m) on upgrading its Ribblesdale cement plant to improve production efficiency and reduce emissions, AggNet reports. Simon Gibson Transport Ltd is increasing its fleet of trucks from 85 to 147 having won a major order with Aggregate Industries (LafargeHolcim Group) to transport cement from UK import terminals to distribution centres nationwide over a five-year period, reports the Hull Daily Mail. The UK's Office of National Statistics has released its construction figures for August that saw a fall of 1.5 per cent in construction activity. Decreases were seen in all new work as well as the repair and maintenance segments of 1.4 and 1.5 per cent, respectively. Infrastructure suffered the biggest downturn of 5.1 per cent. Tarmac has unveiled a new, state-of-the-art cement packing facility at its Tunstead cement site, near Buxton, Derbyshire, UK. The Westbury cement works, owned by Tarmac, constructed its site in the early 1960s. This weekend a 122m-high chimney at the site was demolished, after being taken out of action in 2009. Ireland’s Ecocem has invested EUR30m into a new production plant in the north of France as part of a joint venture with ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steel company.
