Financier Dermot Desmond is reported to have acquired a stake in Ecocem Materials, the low-carbon cement producer founded by Irishman Donal O’Riain and backed by Saint-Gobain. Lafarge Cement has ruled out compulsory redundancy if it removes its transport fleet at the company’s Cauldon works in the UK, according to local press reports. Hanson Cement is holding two public exhibitions in May to explain plans for the GPB20m upgrade project at its Padeswood cement works in Flintshire, UK, which the company says "will guarantee the long-term future of the plant and its 96 employees". Construction market demand in the UK for mineral products was higher in the first three months of this year compared with the previous quarter, providing some evidence of continued impetus in construction activity at the start of the year, according to the Mineral Products Association (MPA).
